Alison's and your ...   Written by Reeba (3/16/2013 10:46 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Emma's "dislike" of Jane Fairfax, penned by Thérèse
Are you new?

POV about why Emma disliked Jane Fairfax is actually a very reasonable one.

"Why she did not like Jane Fairfax might be a difficult question to answer; Mr. Knightley had once told her it was because she saw in her the really accomplished ..."

The question being difficult to answer by Emma in her thoughts, brings Mr Knightley to her mind.
She doesn't know why it is him and not the aunt (Miss Bates) that should come to her mind when searching for a reason.

Similar situations;
Mr Knightley being jealous of Frank Churchill because of Emma's apparent partiality towards him,
and Emma's jealousy of Jane Fairfax because of Mr Knightley's praising her.

(Of course you've both already mentioned this).

Thank you so much for this insight. I had failed to link these two things.

Also, because of the wonderful clues spread all over the book about various things to pass later on, this is an excellent clue supported by the Mr Knightley clue about Frank.
