Mr Woodhouse Hard work?   Written by bridget D (3/16/2013 8:24 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Extent of Mr Woodhouse care, penned by Thérèse
Are you new?

I dont see that it was "work" as such. Emma sometimes found it tiring, if she was depressed herself, but overall, all she had to do was to play games with him, talk to him cheerfully and run the house. She had plenty of time for amusement, such as walking and chatting and shopping with Harriet, and visiting. In fact her problem is really NOT having enough to do, which is why, since she is not interested in pursuing accomplishments very much, she spends too much time trying to matchmake.

Mr W was perfectly cheerful when he had pleasant company, as he did most nights since he is an agreeable, if not very clever old man. And I am not sure where you're getting the idea that "Mr Knightley's - was probably the real manager of their fortune and estate". There's no evidence of this. The estate was small, as we're told and would be run efficiently by the bailiff. Their fortune would be managed by their lawyer or man of business.
This isn't mentioned in hte novel becauase JA didn't usually concern herself with anythign that wasn't part of the main story and because she was writing for her contemporaries who were well aware of how estates and fortunes were managed.
