He kept a carriage, coachman, horses and servants including "a competent number of nursery maids" for his five children (chap 11). He was a London barrister, not a country attorney, so he probably earned quite a lot of money, certainly much more than 500 a year, as well as what part he received from Isabella's dowry upon their marriage.
