Emma and Darcy   Written by Nikki N (3/15/2013 11:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, You are of course right..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

When Darcy said his parents "almost taught me to be selfish and overbearing", I'm sure he did not mean that they actually told him to be selfish and overbearing! (After all they gave him good principles.) I think it means that they too often praised him for his clverness, his superior intelligence over other boys his age, how good he was, what excellent sense he had, how very proud they were of him etc. -- as over-indulgent parents of a clever child tend to do -- so he tended to think meanly of others' sense in comparison to his own.

Mr K said in cahp 4 -- "Emma is spoiled by being the cleverest of her family. At ten years old, she had the misfortune of being able to answer questions which puzzled her sister at seventeen". I'm sure Miss Taylor very often praised Emma for her cleverness, and could see no fault in her. To be able to answer quetions at 10 which puzzled Isabella at 17!
