Nikki very good post. YOu siad what I was going to say. Emma IS like Darcy in being spoiled, in spite of having a good heart and good principles. She is admired by almost everyone, and Knightly is the only person who can see faults in her. but Mr K while friendly with say William Cox or Robert Martin is still aware of the social ranking differences -. He is just more sensible and sensitive how he interprets them. He doesn't interfere in their lives as Emma might do, or haughtily snub them, as Darcy might do...He is willing to mix with them, but he problaby would not wish his daughter to marry Rob Martin's son, or to have Robert and Harriet to dinner on a regular basis.

WRT the Coles, they are "first generation" wealth and so while they are considered part of Highbury society, becuase tehy have made a lot of money and are throwing parties, they are still "on the way in and up". Mr Weston's family are of a higher origin and he has now acheived full gentility by having been in the army (genteel profession) and now buying an estate.
