accomplishments, and Mr K   Written by Nikki N (3/13/2013 11:27 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I disagree ;-), penned by Reeba
Are you new?

I did not mean to be harsh on Emma, actually I meant to praise her by saying that she did care about accomplishments. (A certain envy or competition mixed with genuine admiration can be a positive instead of a negative emotion, if it spurs thee person to attempt to improve herself). Emma had the sense to realize and acknowledge Jane's superior skills, and tried to improve her own skills by practising vigorously. It is unfortunate if, as you say, that feeling is momentary and not lasting, then Mr K was right in saying that she would not submit to "industry and patience". The same goes fo her reading and drawing -- many of her drawings were unfinished (except Harriet's portrait), and she intended to read more, but did not.

Mr K did not have a lot to learn himself. He spoke unkindly of Harriet when Harriet, under Emma's persuasion, refused Robert martin, but he was right that Emma nearly ruined Harriet's happiness, and Harriet was silly to have refused Robert when she actually wanted to accept him. Fortunately Robert continued to love her and asked her again. All Mr K learned about Harriet after talking more to her was that she was an amiable girl who was better than the vulgar Mrs Elton (which is quiite obvious). But Mr K never found out how silly Harrfiet was by raising her hopes to him, Emma did not tell him for poor Harriet's sake and "quietly submitted to a little more praise than she deserved".
