PS: The other thing about.. Written by Reeba (3/12/2013 6:30 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Hmmm., penned by Reeba

..her compassion being suspect.

Emma is genuinely a compassionate and kind person as we are told;

" Emma was very compassionate; and the distresses of the poor were as sure of relief from her personal attention and kindness,

> Emma can feel both compassionate and superior to Jane when she sees her as ill or unhappy.

You mean even when Jane rejects her compassion again...and ...again?
That's not a superior position at all IMO. In fact it's a completely humble position, at which Emma stays put and continues her efforts to be kind.

Compassion and feeling superior because of another person's suffering can't go together.

It's more like Emma's compassion and kindness dominate any other feelings that she might have.
