Socialising   Written by bridget D (3/9/2013 2:10 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, True, but..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

Not really.. People of their class socialised because ti was what they did. Life was different. They were expected to mix with people of their own class... and since Jane was by gentry standards very poor, it was also Emma's duty to show her some "attention" to mitigate the effects of J's poverty. Inviting her to the house, offering her the use of the piano etc was the sort of thing that Emma as leading lady of hte area SHOULD do for an impoverished lady of her own age. JUst as it was her duty to visit the Bates ladies, invite them to dinner, send them presents like the hind quarter of pork etc.

J and Emma didnt have to be best friends, but as Emma knew, she was NOT doing her duty fully by Jane.. she was "always doing more than she wanted to do, but less than she ought".
