In S&S, Elinor actually had no right to be jealous, since she was not engaged to Edward, it was Lucy who was engaged to Edward at that time and had the right to be jealous. But Lucy was more interested in Edward's inheritance and she was not going to break off the engagement even though she believed Edward now loves Elinor. Jane, being an honourable character unlike Lucy, suffered when she believed Frank had transferrted his affections to Emma, but decided to release him from the engagement -- if he loves Emma, then she would release him to be free to marry Emma.
