A straight-forward, open-hearted man, like Weston, and a rational unaffected woman, like Miss Taylor, may be safely left to manage their own concerns. (ch. 1) -- and moved on to a harder one, thinking her success meant she was blessed with talent: making a lady who had a preference already, decline that one, and prefer another. Indeed, Emma would have been a more flexible match-maker (and therefore more worthy), if, after receiving a hint from Mr. Knightley, would have investigated more, and perhaps changed Harriet's focus. The snags she runs into are all rookie mistakes! |
