True, Knightley isn't talking about being friends with Jane, but about showing her proper attentions as an impoverished gentlewoman. He feels that the time she's bestowed on Harriet woudl be better spent on Jane. Jane is not friendly, true but she's got a secret to hide and since Emma hasn't been as attentive as she ougt to be, in times past, it isn't easy for Jane to be open with her or to develop something more of a relationship wiht Emma now.
