I cannot fault the reasoning of yourself and Nikki over the course of this conversation. (Sorry for eavesdropping.) Your final summary here is excellent. I would only add that from the first, I never doubted that Emma was already in possession of her fortune. My reason is simply my respect for the concise and accurate way Jane writes. Her very first sentence boldly proclaims Emma to be rich, not the daughter of a rich man nor someone with expectations. Clear and simple. That's good enough for me.
