The article makes little logical sense. What does kissing and courtship have to do with assessment of genetic fitness in Jane Austen's time? None of the Austen heroines would have locked lips with anyone until at least their engagement. And I agree with your previous point about Austen characters and their ability at assessing where they were in the mating market. I am skeptical of the conclusions drawn about kissing being a way to assess genetic fitness as well. In fact, the whole article is a jumble, and perhaps something got lost in summarizing the original study.
