I agree that the characters and situations need not be exactly similar to draw parallels and contrasts. but I can't help feeling, IMO, that to compare Crawford and Darcy is like comparing chalk and cheese.
Actually I tend to compare Crawford with Frank Churchill in Emma, and Emma itself as in a way a lighter, happier version of MP (though not exactly similar of course). I feel that Mr Knightley might be a more mature Edmund, and Emma a Mary Crawford who had good principles, Frank a more juvenile and less corrupt Henry Crawford, and Jane Fairfax a Fanny who returned his affections.
