are Val McDermid for Northanger Abbey, due in Spring 2014 and Curtis Sittenfeld for Pride & Prejudice in Autumn 2014. McDermid is a crime writer, so I'd guess that Catherine Morland will perhaps be carried away by reading or watching too many detective stories rather than Gothic romances. I've never read any of Sittenfield's books, but it seems she (despite the masculine name) is American. One hopes she will be up to the tricky prospect of a P&P in which the Longbourn entail could be successfully challenged in the European Court of Human Rights, there is no reason why the Bennet girls can't get jobs, nor would marrying Mr Collins be Charlotte Lucas' best career option and Darcy would be struggling with inheritance tax since even if his father made the estate over to him as soon as he was 18 in an attempt to avoid it, Mr Darcy senior would then have had to survive 7 years after the gift and he didn't. The upside would be that Wickham, if he tried to get a 15-yearold girl to run away with him, would be in prison - only he wouldn't try, as English law no longer has the iniquitous proposition that a woman's money belongs to her husband unless protected by settlement. He'd probably be targetting trophy wives of rich elderly men, then blackmailing them.
